Licensing Languishes

Steve Sleeper, executive director of the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), put out an open letter to our industry. It seems congress is trying to deregulate the cosmetology licensing once again which would leave us in a bad spot. We are professionals precisely because we have to go through training to learn our trade- taking away the meaning behind the license is an insult to the craft and those who practice it. Not only that, deregulation is flat-out dangerous. We are trained to use hazardous chemicals and trusted with using sharp objects on people, which my sound silly, but without regulation anyone could walk in off the streets and could accidentally, or worse, on purpose, cause major damage.

The way to fix this problem, Sleeper says, is to get some sort of standardization in training across the states and to start gathering information- that means studies and statistics people. We are a serious industry, and it seems more than common sense (who said Washington had that anyway) we need numbers. You can read the full letter in the link below.
