Appraising Appraisals Part Two

We continue our discussion of why appraisals (reviews) are integral to you business here with more answers from Abby and Katy Whittaker, as well as some tips to plan a successful review.

So, we know why appraisals are important, but what can you do to make sure they’re successful? First be prepared. Have what you’re going to say in mind and don’t be afraid of forms, a little paper work makes it a bit more officious after all. Explain how your system works to you staff so they won’t be surprised by anything. Listen to the person you’re reviewing, and be encouraging while accentuating the positive! This isn’t beat-down time, it’s an opportunity for growth and learning. Remember to follow up as well. If you don’t follow up on what you say in the review, what’s the point? Give dates even for when a goal should be hit. For example if a stylists isn’t selling any product, set a date for when they ought to have X units sold, etc. Always keep in mind as well, these are individuals with unique strengths- use that to your advantage to form a great team!
