Appraising Appraisals Part One

The appraisal (called performance review in the 9-5 world) is a integral part of running your salon. But how often should you do them and how can you make the most of them? We have a two part article filled with answers to all your appraisal questions answered by two women- Abby and Katy Whittaker- who run 10 salons! So, basically, they know what they’re doing.

Some salon owners question why they should do an appraisal or review in the first place- and it’s a valid question. Done right it takes time and effort that could be used elsewhere. The fact is reviews help bring stylists into the fold. It makes the stylist/ owner relationship one on one which makes them feel more fulfilled and this produce better results.

When you run them is another common question. Abby and Katy have monthly mini-reviews where the stylists are talked to about one aspect of performance like sales, customer service, or fellow stylist relationships. These are short and sweet and meant to either support strong behaviors or correct weak ones. They follow up with an annual review that covers all topics.

An appraisal will help you know where your stylists are at personally and professionally while making them feel their voice is heard. You learn their strengths and weaknesses to know how to use them while giving them advice on how to grow, and in turn your business grows.
