A Simple White Board – Books Appointments…

Have you ever heard of the term “Social Proof”? Well, you may not be able to define it but when I tell you what it is…you will recognize it. That’s because we ALL do it. OK, what do I mean?

Well, “Social Proof” refers to a psychological phenomenon where people assume the actions of others reflect “correct” behavior for a given situation. In other words, they want to see if other people are already doing something before they “jump in”. A good example of social proof is when people read reviews.

Why do people read reviews on the Internet? Because they want to see if other people “liked” the place before they risk their hard earned dollars. Let me ask you something. If you pulled into a restaurant and there were 2 cars in the parking lot…would you feel that maybe you picked the wrong place? Of course you would.

When a person is in a situation where they’re unsure of the correct way to behave, they will often look to others for cues concerning the correct behavior. I guess you could call it “crowd influence”. Well, that is why client reviews are so important. And also, why Facebook fans are super important.

Let me ask you this question…if you saw that a salon had 1500 Facebook fans…what would you think? You would think that this place must be pretty good to have all those fans. It’s just natural to think that way. Well, how can you use “Social Proof” almost immediately to get some increased salon sales?

Here is a simple, effective way to do it. Use a simple white board. Huh? That’s right…use a simple white board. Let me explain….

I’ve seen this technique used in large successful salons all over the United States. Essentially, you get a White Board (at an Office supply place), a few markers, and maybe a stencil. Each day, you go thru your appointment book and see where there are “available appointments” for the current day.

Then you create your “Last Minute Appointments”. For example, you may have 3 manicure appts available, 2 haircut appts, 5 waxing appts, etc. You put the service description, the time and “status” on the board. When a person books one of the appointments from the board…simply have the receptionist place the word “taken” in the status column next to the service.

So, when clients “check-in” at the desk…they see a board with a list of “available appointments” for the day…and then some that are not available now because they have been “taken”. This will trigger some clients to book an appointment because they have seen others do the same thing (a.k.a social proof).

It will also remind some clients that your salon actually does certain types of services. You would be shocked at how many of your clients have no idea that they can get waxing done at your salon. The beauty of the “white board” is that it also uses scarcity to drive client behavior.

So, you have two known influencers working in your favor. Get in the habit of doing this white board every day. It is a super simple way to get clients to buy more services in your salon. And once you buy the white board…it doesn’t cost you anything to market to your clients.

And remember…potential clients read Internet reviews every day and make buying decisions because of them. Also the number of Facebook fans you have…can really impact your salon’s positioning in the mind of your potential prospect.
